THEATRE ETIQUETTE

For many, attending a live performance is a longstanding tradition where certain rules are followed and certain courtesies are expected. For others, attending a live performance may be new territory. Here are some suggestions for how to prepare for a live performance.

• Dress to impress. MIAC does not have a dress code, but most patrons opt for business or business-casual attire. Please use fragrances sparingly, as some people have allergies, and remove all hats while seated.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled curtain time. If you arrive after the performance begins, you may be asked to wait in the lobby until there is an appropriate pause in the performance.
• Follow the directions of the front-of-house staff. They are on hand to help you, maintain an orderly environment, and ensure the show begins as scheduled.
• Discard food and drink before entering the auditorium.
• Turn off all cell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices before the performance begins. The experience of a live performance can be ruined by the interruption of ringtones, alarms, or vibrating phones and by the light of text messaging.
• Unwrap all candies, cough drops, and lozenges before the performance begins.
• Refrain from taking photos and/or recording video or audio during the performance.
• Wait for a pause in the action before rifling through a purse, backpack, or bag.
• Do not sing along unless encouraged by the artist.
• Keep talking to a minimum. Conversations are distracting to both the performers and your fellow audience members.
• Remain in your seat until after the final bow and leave only when the house lights come up.
• Take any concerns to the front-of-house staff, who will address the matter appropriately.
